In 2022, student academic employees voted to form a union, Western Academic Workers United (WAWU).

Between May 6 and 9, 2024, Educational Student Employees in this group will vote on authorizing their bargaining committee’s ability to call a strike. An open letter to faculty, staff, and fellow students explaining their positions can be found here.
